Marcher Castles Way
The Marcher Castles Way begins in the historic town of Shrewsbury, with its medieval streets and rich history. It winds through quiet lanes and off-road paths, passing the Roman remains at Wroxeter and the birthplace of the industrial revolution at Ironbridge. Next, the trail ascends the myth-laden Wenlock Edge, offers stunning views from the Clee Hills, and drops into the charming town of Ludlow. From here, you traverse forests and riverside villages, watched over by ancient castles, before entering Wales at Presteigne.
The route then joins Offa’s Dyke, tracing the old border between Wales and England through a landscape rich in history and natural beauty. Knighton and Clun provide more historical sites, leading to the Kerry Way, which takes you further into Wales. After a steep climb to Newtown, a key resupply point, the journey continues along the Montgomery Canal and up to Montgomery with its castle ruins.
The final stretch includes breathtaking views from the Shropshire Hills, summiting Cordon Hill, Stiperstones, and the Long Mynd, before descending into Church Stretton. The last major climb is Caer Caradoc, followed by peaceful singletrack roads. Langley Chapel, Acton Burnell Castle, and Telford’s Cantlop Bridge mark the final historic points before returning to Shrewsbury to complete the route.
